Shaping the Roughness

"Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill made low, the crooked shall be made straight and the rough ways made smooth." (Luke 3:5)

At the heart of every big celebration is an intense time of planning, organizing, and preparing. From the major sports events, like the ISL, to small family gatherings, like at Thanksgiving, preparation time is indeed the longest and most grueling time in the whole event. The rate of success of the event is almost entirely dependent on the time spent in preparatoin.

Advent is the season when we prepare our souls to welcome Christ. The readings at every Advent season constantly emphasize the pressing need to be prepared for the Lord's coming. I'm not really against the Christmas preparations done at home where we decorate and clean up the house. Rather, my concern is our spiritual preparation. To be honest, there are times when I have failed to do this myself but I do believe that if we set this as our priority, our Christmas would be more joyful and fruitful.

We have already entered into the Advent season and are slowly inching closer to the big day that is Christmas. So let us work towards preparing our souls for Christmas. It i never too late to begin but it would be better late than never. Like the passage mentioned above, let us smoothen out the roughness in our soul and greet the Lord at Christmas with a heart that is pure!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner and the buzz around the new Sara Ali Khan-Kartik Aaryan starrer, Love Aaj Kal, I began pondering as to what is that one love that has been present yesterday, today and continues. While I have read and heard one too many talks on ‘Jesus the Perfect Valentine’, I believe the more important theme we could look at is Jesus’ never-ending love for us. Theology is a process and one never comes to a finished state of theological insight. These are the opening statements of Derek Johnston’s book A Brief History of Theology . At the outset, Johnston says that this book provides a glimpse into what theology is all about. It introduces key ideas of the theologians of various areas and what were the questions that gripped them at their particular times. The book is meant to provide the foundations for the reader to think theologically. As one goes through the book, one comes across the thoughts of great theologians and thinkers like St. Augustine, John Wesley, Karl Rahner, St. Thomas Aquinas and John Calvin to name a few. The violence around us is a reminder for us that we are still sinners and that we need to seek God. A search for peace without a search for God is a fruitless search. Only God can grant us peace.
