The Human Battery

Jonathan was no ordinary boy. Though he seemed ordinary in his dealings with the other students in his class, he had an innate gift that he himself was yet to discover. This power that he possessed enabled him to absorb electricity – so as to charge himself – and to give off electricity – that would make him lose energy. He was a like a storehouse of electricity. He was a human battery.

The day he discovered the super power that he had was like any other ordinary day. He was walking back home one evening when he noticed a lamp-post that had a flickering bulb. Knowing what his mother had taught him, he dared not go near it as he did not want to do anything that would bring about more damage. However, he felt drawn towards it. It was as if the lamp-post was calling out to him for help. Reluctantly, he moved towards the lamp-post and as he touched it, he felt an electric energy pass from him onto the lamp-post. Suddenly, the light atop the lamp-post began to shine normally without any flicker.
Once he realized the power he had within him, he used it to play pranks in school where he would draw out the electricity in a class to show as if the current had tripped. However, he later felt the need to be responsible for this power he possessed. He took it upon himself to

give off electricity to any place or person who was in need of it. Day by day, he would go around searching for those in need of electricity or a bit of light and provide electricity to them.
In our lives too, we can also be Jonathans to all those we meet. We may not have the special power of absorbing and giving of electricity like the Human Battery. But, we have the power of love innate within us which is constantly kept charged because of the love we receive from our family, friends and loved ones. What do we do with this huge energy of love within us? Do we keep it for ourselves or do we share it with others? Just like a battery that is not used for long eventually becomes unserviceable, similarly, when we refuse to share our love with others we too become mere presences on the face of the Earth. There are so many people waiting to receive love from someone. There are many places that have forgotten how to love because of the environment of violence around them. Are we ready to share our love with them? Can we be human batteries of love to the unloved?
